The TCBY Timeline

TCBY Enterprises, Inc., through subsidiary companies, manufactures and sells soft serve frozen yogurt and sorbets, hardpack frozen yogurt, hardpack ice cream, and frozen novelty products, and markets foodservice equipment. The Company is the largest manufacturer/franchisor of frozen yogurt in the world. The Company, through subsidiaries, develops products under the TCBY® and Juice Works® brands.

1981

  • The first TCBY® shop opened in Little Rock, Arkansas; TCBY was founded by Frank D. Hickingbotham.
1982
  • The Company begins franchising.
1983
  • The Company acquires Americana Foods, its manufacturing facility in Dallas, Texas.
1984
  • TCBY Enterprises, Inc., becomes a publicly-held company.
  • TCBY opens its 100th shop.
  • The Company introduces the TCBY® Waffle Cone.
1985
  • TCBY opens its 200th shop.
1986
  • TCBY opens its 400th shop.
  • TCBY International division is formed.
  • Franchise family selects United Cerebral Palsy to be the TCBY national charity.
  • Americana Foods builds a 36,000-square-foot facility.
1987
  • TCBY closes the year with over 800 shops in operation.
  • The first international TCBY® shop opens in Toronto, Canada.
  • TCBY makes its national television advertising debut.
  • The first TCBY® airport location opens in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota.
1988
  • TCBY Enterprises, Inc., common stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (TBY).
  • The Company opens its 1000th location.
  • TCBY International opens the first TCBY® shops in The Bahamas and Taiwan.
  • Riverport Equipment and Distribution Company is established.
1989
  • TCBY National Sales initiates development of non-traditional locations.
  • The Company introduces the TCBY Shiver® Frozen Treat.
  • The Company introduces TCBY® nonfat frozen yogurt.
1990
  • The Company introduces the TCBY® Yog-A-Bar® frozen treat.
  • TCBY introduces nonfat/no-sugar-added frozen yogurt.
  • TCBY International opens the first shop in Japan.
  • Americana Foods expands to a 181,000-square-foot facility.
1991
  • TCBY celebrates its tenth anniversary.
  • TCBY has over 1,800 locations worldwide.
  • The Company introduces TCBY® Sundette® sundaes.
  • TCBY International opens the first TCBY® shops in Mexico and Thailand.
  • The Company introduces TCBY® Traditional Style Yogurt, its refrigerated yogurt product.
1992
  • TCBY International opens the first shop in Aruba.
  • The Company has over 200 non-traditional locations in operation.
  • The Company introduces TCBY® Half Gallon and Gourmet Collection Pint frozen yogurt products to grocery stores.
1993
  • TCBY International opens the first shops in Bahrain, Qatar, Egypt, and The Canary Islands.
  • The Company has over 900 non-traditional locations in operation.
  • TCBY International signs an agreement for the development of China.
  • The Company has over 2,400 locations in operation.
1994
  • The Company has over 2,800 locations in operation worldwide.
  • TCBY International opens the first shops in Chile, China, Indonesia, Jamaica, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and The United Arab Emirates.
  • TCBY® Treats concept rolled out nationwide.
  • The Company has over 1,300 non-traditional locations in operation.
1995
  • Over 40 percent of domestic locations in operation converted to new TCBY® Treats concept.
  • $8.5-million expansion of Americana Foods completed.
  • Several new international development agreements signed, including Spain, India and Russia.
  • Non-traditional development expands through convenience store locations.
1996
  • The Company celebrates its fifteenth anniversary.
  • The Company celebrates its ten-year anniversary with United Cerebral Palsy.
  • The Company has over 400 combined concept locations in operation.
  • The Juice Works® concept is acquired.
  • Over 200 locations and thousands of points-of-sale operate internationally.
  • Private label production at Americana Foods expands.
1997
  • TCBY and Subway establish co-branding alliance in the United States and Canada.
  • First Juice Works® airport locations open in San Diego and Chicago O'Hare airports.
  • International development licensed in over 65 countries.
  • Host Marriott commits to develop Juice Works® locations in airports, travel plazas and mall food courts.
  • Juice Works announces development agreement with Host Marriott.
  • TCBY signs agreement with Total Petroleum.
  • TCBY signs agreement with Travel centers of America, Inc.
  • TCBY announces new international development in Europe and Central America.
  • TCBY and Nathan's announce co-branding alliance.
1998
  • TCBY signs development agreement with Phillips Petroleum Company.
